Fund Scorecard: Copying Their New Buys

For 28 famous funds we bought every new or increased position the day after its 13F filing, when the public could first see it. 2 of 28 funds' picks beat the S&P 500 since.

A 13F shows what a fund held at the end of a quarter, filed up to 45 days later. By the time it is public, the fund may already have traded again. This scorecard asks the practical question: if you had bought each stock a fund opened or added to, at the first weekly close after the filing, how would it have done to the latest weekly price, compared with putting the same money into the S&P 500 (SPY) on the same day? Each pick counts equally. Only the largest moves of each quarter are included (up to 25 per filing), and quarters filed in the last 30 days are too new to judge.

How to read it

Recent quarters have had less time to work, so a fund whose best picks are recent can look worse than it will. A fund with few picks can rank high on one big winner. And the scorecard ignores what the fund sold and how large each position was, so it measures copying the visible buys, not the fund's own returns. Right now Coatue Management's picks lead and Carl Icahn's trail. See also the latest 13F filings in plain English.
